クリーブランド・クリフス社とCEOのゴンカルベス氏による、発言の即時撤廃と謝罪を要求する

日本時間の1月14日に米国のオハイオ州クリーブランドに本社を置く大手鉄鋼会社の「クリーブランド・クリフス社」は会見を開き、USスチールの買収の計画を発表した。この記者会見において、社長であるゴンカルベス氏が日本製鉄のUSスチール買収に猛反発した。一方で、日本人に対する「差別発言」「ヘイトスピーチ」とも読み取れる発言を幾度もしたことで話題になっている。具体的には、「日本よ、気をつけろ。あなたたちは自分が何者か理解していない。1945年から何も学んでいない」や「中国は悪だ。中国は恐ろしい。しかし日本はもっと悪い。」などと、第二世界大戦で敗北した件を名指しでのべた。国際連盟広報センターによれば、「ヘイトスピーチ」は「人の内的属性（人種、宗教、ジェンダーなど）に基づいて、ある集団や個人を標的とし、社会の平和をも脅かす可能性のある攻撃的言説」と定義している。今回のゴンカルベス氏による発言は「人の内的属性」、日本人という民族・集団を明らかに標的にしている。また、本件の日鉄に対する建設的な批判の範疇を超えた明らかな「ヘイトスピーチ」とも伺える発言には米国内でも評価が分かれており、アメリカのニュースサイト「アクシオス」は「反日的な言葉に満ちた記者会見」と報じている。これを踏まえ、本件では「クリーブランド・クリフス社とCEOのゴンカルベス氏による、発言の即時撤廃と謝罪を要求する」

Demand an immediate apology and withdrawal of the statement from both Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. and its CEO Lourenco Goncalves.

January 13th, 2025, Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. has addressed its interest in purchasing US Steel instead of Nippon Steel. Here the CEO of Cleveland-Cliffs Lourenco Goncalves made a speech intending to criticize Nippon Steel’s intentions of purchasing US Steel. However, during the speech, there were moments where Lourenco Goncalves conducted “hate speech” towards the Japanese People. According to the United Nations, “Hate Speech” is defined as “offensive discourse targeting a group or an individual based on inherent characteristics (such as race, religion or gender) and that may threaten social peace”. With this in mind, Lourenco Goncalves stated the following, “Japan beware, You don’t understand who you are. You did not learn anything since 1945”, and “Japan is evil. Japan taught China a lot of things”. From these statements alone it is apparent Lourenco Goncalves intends to not constructively criticize Nippon Steel but rather directly target the Japanese people and their ethnicity. Therefore, on behalf of the Japanese People, we demand an immediate apology and withdrawal of the statement from both Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. and its CEO Lourenco Goncalves.
