Hi friends! Thank you so much for signing this petition, sharing it within your networks and extending your support that has resulted into this victory!
In India, many restaurants, pubs and clubs discriminate against persons who identify themselves as LGBTQIA by denying them entry. After receiving more than 11,000 signatures on this petition, Zomato launched the 'LGBTQIA friendly' tag for restaurants in 6 cities in May 2019 to encourage inclusive entry practices.
Every 3 months, Zomato reaches out to restaurants, sensitises them about LGBTQIA inclusivity and awards the tag to those restaurants that are ready to explicitly state their entry policy for LGBTQIA persons. As of today, more than 1000 restaurants in India have marked themselves as 'LGBTQIA friendly' - Bangalore (261), Mumbai (232), Delhi (178), Pune (172), Chennai (77), Kolkata (30), Gurgaon (14), Hyderabad (12), etc.
This is a great start and the effort put in by the team at Zomato is worthy of praise.
Zomato mentioned that lot of the restaurants say that LGBTQIA users are welcome but do not want to state it for a variety of reasons. In the second round of outreach, few restaurants that didn't publicly state it in the first round said they were happy to add the tag. This gives us hope that after multiple such cycles, the tag will become redundant and all restaurants in India will start welcoming guests irrespective of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
If you ever visit a 'LGBTQIA friendly' restaurant and are denied entry based on your gender identity or sexual orientation, please report it to Zomato so they can bring it up with the restaurant and prevent unpleasant experiences for LGBTQIA persons.
One of my suggestions to Zomato was to dissociate itself from restaurants that deny entry to LGBTQIA persons. Zomato has refused to take this step in the interest of its business. However, last year, when a Zomato user discriminated against a delivery partner based on his religion by refusing to accept the food being delivered, Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal mentioned that he was okay losing business that comes in the way of the company's values. Zomato's tweet - Food has No Religion - became viral. This demonstrates that Zomato considers religion-based discrimination absolutely unacceptable, but is okay to partner with restaurants that discriminate based on Gender Identity and Sexuality. This is unfortunate and I hope one day Zomato learns that ALL TYPES OF DISCRIMINATION IS UNACCEPTABLE..
Going ahead, if you feel that something around you needs to improve - take charge, create a petition, make your folks aware, amplify your voice, influence the authorities. BE THE CHANGE!
