Have Zeta Tau Alpha Make Anti-Racist Policies Within Their Fraternity

Have Zeta Tau Alpha Make Anti-Racist Policies Within Their Fraternity
The Issue
To the members of the Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity:
Black Lives Matter.
As alumni of Zeta Tau Alpha, we are angered at the senseless murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, Nina Pop, and so many others whose names we do not know. Of course, this only scratches the surface of systemic racism, something our country was founded upon.
Therefore, we have created this petition to ensure that ZTA serves the Black community as well as individuals who belong to the LGBTQ+ and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities.
We acknowledge the steps that ZTA has taken in the right direction including the Inclusion Committee, Inclusion Philosophy, and a recent educational blog post, but these words are not enough. ZTA is an organization with a national reach and a net worth of $34 million, it can offer much more to the LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities. With 234 active alumnae chapters and 173 active collegiate chapters, our fraternity has a strong presence across campuses and nationwide. But thus far, ZTA has taken a soft approach to anti-discrimination. As ZTAs, we have a duty to think in terms of all mankind and our service to the world. This cannot be accomplished in today’s world without a clear statement against anti-discrimination and a concrete plan of action.
We also know that our organization takes pride in our creed, and we demand that ZTA utilize all their resources to become an anti-racist organization.
With 234 active alumnae chapters and 173 active collegiate chapters, our fraternity has a strong presence across college campuses and throughout the country and we must discover and implement more ways to make meaningful change. As we have seen and witnessed in the past, silence is not only violence but also makes and fosters complicity. Without contributing and doing more to change the injustices within our society, ZTA can no longer uphold “the Right, the Good, and the True.”
We demand that ZTA stand up for Black lives and BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities by taking the following actions:
- Issue an immediate statement denouncing police brutality and announce that no member—alumni, current, or future—shall be negatively impacted by a protest-related arrest now or in the future.
- Allocate dues and housing funds from the 2020 spring semester toward Black Lives Matter, Colors of Change Fund, NAACP fund, Loveland Foundation, the United Negro College Fund, and other pro-Black and civil rights organizations. Additionally, ZTA should encourage collegiate and alumni chapters to create fundraising events for these organizations.
- Implement a 5-year plan, including a diversity audit, for the fraternity to make their hiring and outreach strategy at the National level more equitable plans should be built with external consultation. Additionally, the diversity plan should prioritize equity, racial justice, and diversity within each ZTA collegiate and alumni chapter. These plans must be built with external consultation.
- Provide transparent updates on ZTA’s development and progress on their anti-racist efforts to ensure accountability. These should be provided in each issue of Themis in addition to social media posts and email blasts.
- National should include BIPOC collegiate and non-national officer alumni on the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, as well as establish an email or contact for members to reach out regarding D&I initiatives.
- Require ZTA members to take the Project Implicit test to evaluate their own biases to build, sustain, and maintain an ongoing educational discussion that coincides with their Inclusion programming.
- All chapters, both collegiate and alumni, must uniformly implement anti-discrimination policies and include such in their written by-laws.
- Implement safe and effective means for collegiate and alumni members to report racist behavior for further transparency and accountability, including a defined hierarchy system for internal reporting.
- Integrate anti-discrimination programming into New Member Learning and Risk Management learning modules, including class-specific programs, de-escalation training, and information on safe, local avenues for reporting.
- Make a public statement in support of Trans BIPOC, and ensure that each step towards implementing new diversity standards are inclusive and supportive of transgender, gender nonconforming, and nonbinary BIPOC members.
- Educate members about the history and necessity for NPHC, NALFO, and NAPA organizations and acknowledge ZTA’s role in discriminating against members of these groups.
- Integrate anti-racism learning into New Member Learning, Recruitment, and Risk Management modules using empirically successful diversity training such as perspective-taking and goal-setting modules.
- Expand ZTA’s Non-Discrimination Policy to include color and gender identity. The current policy includes only race, creed, ethnicity, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, or disability.
As Zeta Tau Alpha members, we say “Seek the Noblest.”
But how noble can we truly be if we do not stand up for what is right and implement programs to support pro-Black, LGBTQ+, Indigenous and POC organizations, create structural change within our fraternity system, and combat systemic racism?
Now, it's time for us and for National to commit to doing better by doing the work to be a part of the solution in private.
We hope that this petition is only the start for some. We are currently working with alumni and collegiate members in compiling a list of specific actions chapters and National can implement. We are hoping to share this within the coming weeks.
Members, please do your part by standing with us and signing this petition to demand that ZTA takes more actionable measures to become more actively anti-racist.
