My grandson's life was tragically cut short due to an accidental gunshot. The devastating incident unfolded in the presence of a 'friend' who, out of fear or uncertainty, did not immediately seek assistance. This delay in seeking help was a grievous misstep, a misstep only enabled by a lack of compulsory reporting protocols. As a bereaved grandparent, I am compelled to advocate for change so that others do not suffer a similar fate and families are not torn apart by preventable tragedies. Gunshot injuries, regardless of their nature—whether deliberate, accidental, or self-inflicted—pose a significant risk to life. Swift medical intervention and law enforcement response are paramount to minimizing the harm and potential fatalities stemming from these events. However, without a mandate for reporting such injuries, precious moments slip away and opportunities for life-saving actions are missed. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were over 39,000 firearm-related deaths in the United States in 2019 alone. Moreover, non-fatal gunshot injuries are estimated to be twice as prevalent. Yet, without reporting requirements for non-fatal incidents, we lack comprehensive data to understand the full scope of gun-related harm, hindering effective policy-making and preventative measures. Mandating the reporting of all gunshot injuries can bridge this critical gap. It would not only ensure timely medical care but also improve our national data collection efforts, contributing to evidence-based strategies to combat gun violence. Law enforcement agencies must be involved in understanding and addressing these incidents, yet they remain in the dark if gunshot injuries go unreported. The absence of a reporting requirement for gunshot wounds creates an environment where accidents can go unchecked and unaddressed, as in the tragic case of my beloved grandson. By mandating such reporting, we encourage a culture of accountability and care, where no injury is overlooked, and every victim has a chance at survival.
