WorthLess? Campaign for Fairer Funding in West Sussex's Schools

The Issue

The West Sussex Youth Cabinet would like to support the WorthLess? campaign because we feel very strongly on the subject.

Reasons why:

  • Schools in Hackney (on average) receive £7840 a year per secondary school student and in West Sussex £4756. That is £3084 less.
  • Using the figures above, a school in Hackney with 1500 students will receive £11.76 million a year compared to a West Sussex school with the same amount of pupils that will get £7.134 million. That is £4.626 million less. This is unfair. (Oct 2017)
  • This year our pupils will receive £30 million less than the same number of pupils compared to the average funding authority, £145 million less than the equivalent number of pupils in Greenwich and £263 million than those in Hackney!
  • It is preposterous that the education in London (and elsewhere) is much more expensive, better and more thought out than over here. This means we have a lesser chance of great GCSE scores and the small budget lowers the quality of resources used in classrooms and teaching. For example, there is not enough basic equipment such as stools and chairs for the number of children held in one class. Some schools have chairs that over 40 years old! Fewer good GCSE scores means West Sussex's life chances are reduced. This means employers and universities may not accept the person applying for a job or scholarship because they have not met the educational standards.
  • We think this is not fair for children and young people and would like your help.

What we'll do:

With your views and support, we can show this to our local MPs. If we get support from youth voice, we are contributing to the wider West Sussex campaign to push this important issue further.
