Pledge to use Water Efficiently to Save the World

The Issue

*Please note* This is technically a pledge, not a petition. Here you will learn about saving water, and then sign if you pledge to save water.

Did you know that 97.5% of the earth's water is undrinkable? That only leaves 2.5% of fresh water for us, which most of it is locked away in glaciers and ice caps. We only have about .5% of the world's water supply for us. But yet we use billions of gallons of water a day, not knowing how little we have.

Why should we save water?

We use water for almost every activity we do, including, but not limited too, cooking, cleaning, washing, drinking, and many more.

We also use water for food. Fruits, vegetables and other produce need water to grow. But we also eat animals. Humans aren't the only ones who need water. Every animal on the planet needs water to survive.

Saving water saves you money. No matter where you are, you probably have a water bill. If you save water, you use less water, and then your water bill will go down.

Believe it or not, saving water also saves energy. Pumping water to your homes from the facility requires a high amount of energy, which causes global warming, which is another problem in this world. Saving water reduces your carbon footprint which reduces your impact on global warming.

What would happen if we didn't save water? Global warming would continue, you would lose money, but worst of all, the world would die out. All the food, all the animals, all the people.

Now that you know why you should save water, here are some ways how to do so.

Adults:

  • Check for leaks in faucets or pipes. A small drip in can waste 50 gallons of water per day. Check your toilet for leaks, a way to do this is to put a few drops of food coloring in the toilet tank. (Don't flush) If the coloring appears in the toilet bowl, you might have a leak that may be wasting 100 gallons of water a day.
  • If you can, install water saving shower heads that will make the shower flow 3 gallons per minute, but still feel good.
  • Plant trees and plants that do well without a lot of water.

Adults and Kids:

  • Don't use your toilet as a trash can/ashtray. Every tissue or cigarette butt you flush also flushes 5 to 7 gallons of water.
  • Take shorter showers. Every minute in a shower uses 5-10 gallons of water. A replacement for showers is a bath. Fill the tub halfway. It uses less water than almost all showers.
  • Turn off the water when you're brushing your teeth and shaving. When you're brushing, wet your toothbrush, and fill up a cup to rinse. When you're shaving, fill your sink with a few inches of warm water to rinse your razor.
  • Full loads only. An automatic dishwasher uses 25 gallons of water per cycle. An automatic washer uses 30-35 gallons per cycle.
  • Don't leave the water running. When your rinsing fruits or vegetables, fill up a bowl or sink with clean water. If you wash dishes by hand, don't leave the water running for rinsing. If you have 2 sinks, fill up one with rinsing water. If you only have 1, place the washed dishes on a dish rack, and rinse them with a spray of water or with a pan of water.
  • Water your lawn only when it needs to be watered. A way to test this is to step on some grass. If it bounces back up when you move your foot, then it doesn't need to be watered.
  • Don't water in unnecessary places, make sure your sprinklers point to your lawn, not where the water doesn't do any good.
  • Use a broom to clean your sidewalk and driveway. A hose wastes hundreds of gallons of water.
  • When washing your car, use a bucket with soapy water, and only use a hose to rinse.
  • It might be tempting to play in a sprinkler or hose on a hot day. Unfortunately, this is a waste of water, and should not be done.

Now that you know how to save water, sign below to pledge that you will use at least 1 one way to save water that is listed above.
