You Create the Value—You Deserve the Money: Online Platforms MUST Share Revenue With Users

The Issue

Every day, billions of people spend hours on platforms like YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram.

We post.
We comment.
We watch.
We scroll.

We create the value that drives these platforms to massive profits.

Yet the wealth generated by our time, content, and attention rarely makes its way back to the people who make it all possible—the users.

💡 The Reality
The entire business model of today’s internet depends on users.

  • Your content attracts attention
  • Your engagement keeps people on the platform
  • Your data powers algorithms
  • Your time generates billions in advertising revenue

In 2022 alone:

  • Facebook generated over $117 billion
  • YouTube generated around $29 billion

👉 Almost all of it fueled by users

And yet…

Most users earn nothing.

⚖️ The Imbalance
Even on platforms like YouTube, where monetization exists, only a small percentage of creators earn meaningful income. Smaller creators—the ones bringing diversity, creativity, and innovation—are often left behind.

Meanwhile, the platforms continue to grow richer from the collective effort of millions.

This creates a system where:

  • Users do the work
  • Platforms take the profits

Billions of people are unknowingly participating in a system where their time, attention, and data are monetized—without compensation.

I describe this as a new form of “virtual slavery.

🚨 The Demand
We call on governments and regulators to require major online platforms to:

  • Share a fair portion of advertising and data-driven revenue with users
  • Compensate not only content creators, but also active users who generate engagement
  • Provide full transparency on how user-generated value translates into profit

🌍 Why This Matters
This is not just about money.

It’s about:

  • Fairness
  • Ownership
  • The future of the digital economy

If users are the foundation of these platforms, they must also be part of their success.

🌍 Imagine a Different Internet

An internet where:

  • Every like, comment, and view has value
  • Every user shares in the success they help create
  • Opportunity is not limited to influencers—but open to everyone
