Sir John A Macdonald Public School glorifies the name of a racist man who established Residential Schooling in Canada which lead to over 150,000 First Nation, Métis, and Inuit children losing their families, culture, language, and identity. 

YRDSB's Policy #445 says "Consideration will be given to the principles of equity and the culture, history, and accomplishments of the school(s) affected. Also, consideration will be given to local Indigenous communities and the contributions of Indigenous peoples to the Canadian Mosaic."

YRDSB celebrates Orange Shirt Day every September 30 to honour and remember the survivors of Residential Schools. 

How can we honour the survivors of Residential Schools when the man who started it all is glamourized in the name of our schools? 

Changing the name of Sir John A. MacDonald Public School on 45 Murison Drive, in Markham, Ontario, is only the first step in reconciliation and stopping racism in education.
