Yellowstone Eruption Prevention: Research into Geothermal Energy Extraction

The Issue

Yellowstone National Park is home to one of the largest and most powerful supervolcanoes on Earth. While scientists do not believe an eruption is imminent, the fact remains: Yellowstone will erupt again at some point in the future, and we currently have no plan to prevent it.  

However, there may be a solution that not only reduces the risk of an eruption but also creates a long-term source of clean energy, geothermal heat extraction. Research has shown that carefully harnessing the immense underground heat beneath Yellowstone could safely relieve pressure in the magma chamber while generating sustainable energy for millions of Americans.  

This is not a partisan issue it’s about science, safety, and sustainability. A bipartisan approach to funding research into this idea could lead to technological breakthroughs that:  

✅ Reduce the long-term risk of a catastrophic eruption
✅ Provide clean, renewable energy that helps lower emissions
✅ Create new jobs and drive innovation in geothermal technology
✅ Develop safer drilling techniques that could be applied worldwide 

In 2017, NASA proposed a similar idea, but no large-scale government-backed research has been conducted. We urge policymakers, scientists, and industry leaders to collaborate on a feasibility study exploring how we can safely tap into Yellowstone’s geothermal energy without disturbing the national park.
