GNU General Public License is a licence for a free software. When a software is free, it must be based on 4 fundamentals:

• Freedom to use it for every purpose
• Freedom to study it and modify it

Linux follows this rules, MIUI's kernel is Linux based, so Xiaomi have to follow GPL rules.

So we're asking to Xiaomi to release and update kernel source of Xiaomi Mi 5. All the community have the right to use it, modify it, study it and redistribute it.
