Justice for Gricelda

The Issue

On June 19, 2018 Gricelda Perez purchased a coffee and a string cheese at the ARCO AM/PM convenience store.

ARCO’s store manager contacted the Police Department and accused Griselda of stealing a $2.99 RX protein bar in her jacket pocket.

The Department terminated Gricelda’s employment claiming the “theft” was shown on the store’s video surveillance system.  However, no theft was caught on camera because no theft occurred.

Teamsters Local 1932 Fights for Justice: Since the Department’s decision was not only wrong but also immoral (wrongfully accusing someone of theft) we took on the fight to restore Griselda's good name and get her job back.

An arbitration hearing was held on July 30, July 31, and August 1, 2019 before an impartial arbitrator selected by both parties.

The Arbitrator Ruled in favor of Teamsters 1932 and Gricelda

"Under the circumstances, the Department has failed to establish that there was just cause for termination of Appellant's employment."

                      Arbitrator Decision:

The employment termination of Gricelda Perez was not for just cause. The City shall promptly rescind the employment termination and shall promptly reinstate Ms. Perez to her position and award her all pay and benefits she would have received but for the termination.

The City refused to accept the well-reasoned decision of an experienced and impartial arbitrator.  It did not reinstate Gricelda and instead, on 09/22/2020 the City is taking a “second bite of the apple” and going before City Council asking them to overturn the Arbitrator’s decision. We are asking you to:
