What is the issue?
The serenity of the escarpment, the singular beauty of its unique skyline, and the continued
functionality of Wollongong City itself are currently under threat due to a proposed high-rise
development currently being considered by the NSW State Government.
 
What does this mean?
Under the NSW State Significant Development scheme, developers are seeking to bypass
the jurisdiction of Wollongong City Council and the will of its constituents to fast-track a
project that aims to see the following erected on the site of Flinders Street, North
Wollongong over the next 7 years:
� 4 x 40 storey towers
� 1 x 30 storey tower
� 4 x 27 storey towers
� 5 x 12 storeys towers
These constructions will be accompanied by an expected rise in population of approximately
6400 people, along with 1500+ additional vehicles.
ALARMINGLY… there are currently no considerations or provisions for commensurate
infrastructure planning to support such an abrupt expansion of the City's apparent capacity.
Why is this proposal; WRONG FOR THE GONG;?
Wollongong City Council's URBAN DESIGN FRAMEWORK PLAN; - developed and passed
earlier this year in consultation with the local community - set out a 20-year vision for the
future of the city. This taxpayer funded plan represents an ambitious yet sensible and
appropriate trajectory for the ongoing development of Wollongong. The framework includes
plans for:
� Road infrastructure
� Flood mitigation
� Active transport pathways
This developmental strategy was designed with the City's economic wellbeing in mind, while
remaining compliant and compatible with Wollongong's unique character. In accordance with
the safety and suitability recommendations of the community and relevant government
agencies, the plan also features a mandated height limit of 24-32 meters throughout the
Flinders Street site.

What can I do to help?
At the Wrong for the Gong public meeting addressing the FLINDERS STREET PRECINCT
OVER DEVELOPMENT held on the 30 August 2026, the group resolved to make the
following requests to NSW State Planning and the Minister for Planning and Public spaces:
 
Motion 1: ACKNOWLEDGEMENT of the FLINDERS STREET PRECINCT URBAN PLAN AS
THE PRINCIPAL PLANNING DOCUMENT.

Motion 2: NO DEVELOPMENTS BE APPROVED OR BUILT UNTIL ‘FUNDAMENTAL - ALL
OF PRECINCT- INFRASTRUCTURE IS PLANNED, COSTED & DELIVERED.
