Write to Councilwoman Gauthier to HALT Proposed 48th St Redesign

Write to Councilwoman Gauthier to HALT Proposed 48th St Redesign
The Issue
As residents of 48th Street, South of Baltimore Avenue, we are deeply concerned about the proposed changes to our street and neighborhood. The OTIS 48th Street Greenway Plan was hastily put together using flawed data and without proper traffic studies or input from local residents and impacted stakeholders.
Our street is being sacrificed to alleviate the chaos and congestion on 47th St which is on the Vision Zero, High Injury Network of roads. The proposal, however, threatens to make our streets MORE dangerous rather than safer, for pedestrians, bikers and drivers alike.
It is essential, before re-engineering a street or network of streets, to consider the negative impact of diversionary traffic onto 48th Street and the surrounding quiet blocks of Windsor, Trinity, Regent and Beaumont.
In cities across America, when similar redesigns are implemented without context-specific-design, thorough vetting or community input, they result in an increase in traffic accidents, increased volume on diversionary routes and actual increased speeding. (source: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).
We cannot let this happen to our beloved neighborhood.
We demand Councilwoman Gauthier HALT this redesign until a context-specific-design is properly developed and vetted by all impacted stakeholders.
Please sign this petition and Email or Call Ms. Gauthier’s office to protect our community's safety and integrity.
