Updates on the Petition:
- Petition Delivered to Council
- No Action by CWAC yet
- Campaign Facebook Page
- Keep asking people to Sign
1) Petition Delivered
On 12 December I formally presented the petition to the Council meeting. Normally a petition with this many signatures would be granted a debate by members. The Council said: “Because the issues raised in the petition are closely linked to an ongoing police investigation we are unable to debate it until the investigation is complete.”
I have been in contact with several councillors who support the initiative to reduce the speed. However they say nothing will happen while there is an investigation. I disagree with the premise that an investigation prevents agreeing to any of the points on the petition. I shared this view in my presentation and communications with the council. They have yet to provide any further statements that addresses why the investigation prevents either (i) a temporary speed reduction to mitigate risk, or (ii) a commitment to work with the community on a solution.
The local news covered the story. You can also watch the presentation on the CWaC website.
2) No Action
In addition to not debating the petition, the council have made no obvious acts to mitigate risks on Wrexham Road in the past month. They have not implemented the ask of a 30MPH temporary speed limit while the investigation continues. It is not clear how long the investigation will last. Over 200 children continue to use this high-risk, high-impact crossing every school day.
School term ends tomorrow. Others and I will continue our work, with your support, to have the request implemented as soon as possible, and before the start of the new term in January.
Please continue to express your personal views on this inaction to your MP and Local Councillor. It makes a difference.
3) Facebook Page
Parents and members of the community have setup a Facebook page to provide more frequent updates on reducing the danger on Wrexham Road. This page will have an increasing number of resources on what you can do to help including incident reporting, engaging your local representatives etc. Please like/follow the page.
4) Keep asking people to sign
While the petition has been delivered, we weren't allowed to have a debate. We hope this debate will be allowed next year. The first council meeting this could be held in is in May(!). Let's turn up to that meeting with even more signatures. Please continue to share, and make sure everyone in your household has signed too.
