#WrensLaw: Enact Legislation to Prevent Online Exploitation of Non-Consenting Minors
The Issue
Across social media, parents and non-parents alike have taken to their respective platforms to express their concerns for the lack of safety for minor children that are being posted publicly online.
We are deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of children on the internet. While freedom of speech is encouraged, minor children who cannot speak for themselves cannot defend themselves against the evils in this world. Every day, countless minors are exploited online without their consent, and recently at the hands of parents who make social media accounts for their children or centered around their children’s most vulnerable moments. This is not just a violation of their rights but also an infringement on their innocence and childhood. It's time we take a stand against the dangers of this alarming issue.
According to Thorn, an international organization dedicated to defending children from sexual abuse, 1 in 5 internet users who are minors have been sexually solicited online (Thorn). This statistic is both shocking and unacceptable. We must protect our children from such horrific experiences.
We urge lawmakers to pass legislation entitled “Wren’s Law” that prohibits the exploitation of non-consenting minor children on the internet including Wren, whom this law would be named after. Such laws would hold accountable those who exploit innocent children on social media or other digital platforms for personal or financial gain or pleasure, prevent corporate partnerships with non-consenting minors for advertising, and provide justice & compensation for victims.
It's time we ensure that our digital world is as safe as our physical one for our children. Please sign this petition to show your support for protecting our most vulnerable citizens from online exploitation.
