Thank you so much to every single one of you wonderful and caring people who signed this petition! It was instrumental in convincing the construction company Cheesmur (www.cheesmur.co.uk to work with Fox Guardians - allowing us to monitor the foxes on the construction site and agreeing to fence off the live fox den to protect this habitat and the cubs living in it when the build began. Cheesmur not only allowed us to monitor the site with multiple trail cameras throughout the build but also really listened to advice we gave on removing potential health hazards for the foxes. No foxes were harmed and the den area was protected though it recently caved in based on subsidence and may not be used again by the foxes.
18 months after filming started, I have just visited the site for one final time, collecting my trail cameras as the build is now complete and Cheesmur is handing over the keys to the owners, Worthing Council.
The foxes now face new challenges: around 50 adults and kids will move into the newly developed apartments, so there now will be human activity on site day and night. The den area is no longer fenced off and I hope all tenants living on site will treat the foxes with respect and compassion. I also hope that the owners of the development, Worthing Council will treat the resident foxes with kindness and cooperate with us should any fox-related challenges arise. I was invited by Cheesmur to write a section about the foxes for their hand-over document.
Today I saw on the newly laid top soil fox tracks next to human footprints and I though what an apt symbol this is for peaceful coexistence.
This land does not just belong to human animals but to wildlife too and we not only can but must peacefully coexist. The UK is currently facing an extreme biodiversity crisis and every wildlife habitat we can preserve and every animal we can protect really matters.
Thank you for being a voice for foxes!
Please continue to speak up for wildlife. As this case has shown - we CAN make a difference and letters, a petition and turning up to bear witness, monitor and advise on wildlife under threat can help to save precious lives.
I will now edit my documentary about this story and it will be released on our website and all social media channels around the end of November 2012. Keep an eye on this space!
