The fight for the safety of Ophelia and her cubs is far from over. So far the works have been happening inside the building and the outside environment remains unchanged apart from some fencing that has gone up. However in only a few weeks time the outside excavation work to build extensions are set to begin. One extension will be build on the Rose Garden - a prime spot for this fox family as they always travel through this garden to get to their den. They also like laying up under the rose bushes in the evening sun. Cheesmur Building Contractors promised us in writing that they will create a safe travel route for the foxes next to the excavation. The acid test will be to see what happens when this work starts (currently scheduled to begin on the 27.7) - will the construction company stay true to their word and allow us to continue to monitor the site throughout the build and most importantly will they create this safe route for this fox family?
We will watch very closely and will update you. The more signatures we get, the more leverage when advising the builders. A huge thank you to everyone who has signed and shared this petition so far. Right now we are only 12 signatures away from reaching 8.000 signatures. Our aim is to get to 10.000. So please share this petition again and again on your social media accounts so we can all rally around this fox family and make sure they will be safe throughout the construction that will last many months.
The owners and developers of the site, Worthing Council have been evasive about our request to assure us that the foxes may not be willfully harmed during the development - we have decided to focus our work for now on our cooperation with the construction company who are on site. Our monitoring cameras roll 24/7 and we are review the footage captured on a regular basis to advise the builders on what needs to be done to keep the foxes safe.
We will reach out to the council again as and when needed.
