The issue

The Burrup Hub project is a mega fossil fuel project proposed by Woodside Energy involving the development of two giant new gas fields (Browse and Scarborough) and the extraction of other oil and gas resources off the Northwest of WA, to be processed for export on the Burrup Peninsula. The reason it has gone so under the radar is because Woodside has disguised it as several smaller projects. It involves several different joint ventures including with Shell, BP, BHP, Chevron and other partners.

Now, for why it it one of the most disturbing displays of evil corporatism i have ever seen:

1. It will be the most polluting project in Australia. Ever. This project is suspected to emit more than 4x the emissions of the ADANI coal mine. If it is completed, it will be literally impossible for Australia to reach any of its Paris targets, international climate obligations, or net zero by 2050. Every year, the Burrup Hub will release emissions equivalent to the entire national emissions of New Zealand, Ireland, Norway and Bolivia COMBINED.

2. The gas itself will also be especially polluting. The 'carbon intensity' of gas from the Browse Basin will be nearly double the Australian average. This means that, even if there is the same amount of gas fracked as other projects, there will be more greenhouse gases released. The Burrup Hub will produce some of the most carbon-intensive gas anywhere the world.

3. It is being built on a reef. This project requires over 50 wells drilled on Scott Reef on the Kimberly coast. It is a biodiversity hotspot, home to over 60 endangered marine species and a turtle rookery. This project will decimate the reef and its wildlife.

4. It puts workers and local communities health and safety at risk. Exposure to industrial air pollution has many harmful consequences, which Woodside has failed to report on to date. Also, the regional communities in the areas where the project will be taking place are grappling with a lack of necessary healthcare facilities, making this even more damaging.

5. It damages important Indigenous rock art. Murujuga, or the Burrup Peninsula is home to the worlds most extensive collection of Aboriginal rock art. It is so significant, it has even been nominated to be a world heritage site. Acid gas emissions from the industry are already irreversibly damaging the art, and this project will make the damage worse.

6. This project opens up Western Australia to a large-scale fracking and onshore gas industry. Though the Burrup Hub is fracking offshore (in the ocean), Woodside intends to enable onshore fracking. They are planning to source additional gas for the Burrup Hub from onshore gas fracking from companies including Seven West Media-owned Beach Energy. Onshore fracking can poison groundwater, pollute surface water and threaten our native plants and animals.

7. This project will deliver few economic benefits to Western Australia long-term. WA's gas industry is our smallest employer, the corporations involved pay little or no tax or royalties. Also, the Burrup Hub will leave us with a multi-billion dollar pollution bill. Most of the jobs provided are short term construction jobs, which will likely be FIFO. This is unsustainable for both the workers and the local regional economies. If $50 billion were invested in renewables it would create 27,000 jobs, 6x more than this project would.

AND THERE ARE EVEN MORE REASONS THAN THIS AS TO WHY IT SHOULDN'T GO AHEAD!!!!

We already know the impacts of climate change, and the devastating effects they are wreaking on our planet right now, and will continue to wreak. This year, we have seen devastating flooding on 3 different continents simultaneously. In Western Australia, our temperature extremes, coastal cities and large agricultural industry means that climate change will effect us greatly! So please, sign for the safety of yourself, your friends, your family or even a stranger. DO NOT LET WOODSIDE SCREW OVER OUR SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT FOR ITS OWN FINANCIAL GAIN!!!!!
