UCLA NEEDS A “WOMEN’S CENTER”

UCLA NEEDS A “WOMEN’S CENTER”
The Issue
Hello!
We are the Women's Empowerment Coalition at UCLA (WEC) and we are advocating for the creation of a Women's Center on campus to serve UCLA's student body. Unfortunately, UCLA is one of two UC campuses that does not offer a Women's Center.
UCLA needs to prioritize issues related to gender equity and provide essential resources and opportunities to tens of thousands of students. Basic resources at UCLA are near impossible to find and access, and that search for support becomes even harder when you are coming from a marginalized background. We want to provide a safe and intersectional space that helps students find what they need, especially in regards to gender.
What will this Women’s Center look like? This physical space will ...
--> Center the experiences of women, femmes, non-binary/queer people, and others
--> Offer resources and opportunities to support this population
--> Provide job help, mental health support with specific training on gender issues, peer support network, emphasize gender study class offerings and academic opportunities, offer a breast feeding section, and supply condoms and safe sex information
--> Display consolidated information on organizational, professional, and social opportunities that relate to gender
--> Create a collaborate space and "home base" for all UCLA organizations relating to gender issues (meeting center for clubs to utilize)
--> Build a space to amplify voices that aren't always heard
This will be an intersectional outlet where all people can feel welcomed. It is crucial that we provide these resources to marginalized populations who need it. Thank you for supporting this cause and please let us know if you'd like to get involved/contribute in other ways to this advocacy work.
Thank you again! :)
