Why this petition matters

Started by Walk Me Home

Every woman should be able to walk home safely and live without fear.  Any women knows how it can feel to be walking alone and suddenly feel the sense of someone behind them. Many have paused, or looked at their phone, or moved aside to let the person walk past – their hearts racing.  Most of the time it is just someone else, also walking home. But sometimes, it isn’t.

In the wake of the tragic murder of Sarah Everard, Priti Patel and BT announced all the way back in 2021 that they would launch a phone service, named 888 or Walk Me Home, to help women be safer whilst walking home.  This sounded so promising, but a year and a half later, nothing has launched. With excuses being made both by the Home Office, and BT. Why promise and then not deliver?

What has happened during this time is that more women have been murdered whilst walking alone.

With the changes in government, we now need commitment from the Home Office and BT that these are just not empty promises.

Enough is enough. Women are being let down; lives are being shattered whilst these empty promises are made. Priti Patel and BT offered all the talk, but have we seen the walk? Have we seen action? NO, and we feel angry and let down, and concerned – for ourselves, for the women we love, our sisters, mums, and daughters. For the women who need this safety net.

We are asking, yet again, why the delay?

Please sign this petition to call on the tracker to launch, to protect women from the fear of simply walking home - it’s a simple safety net that was promised – but has so far proved to be an empty one.  Every woman should be able to walk home safely.
