WMU Student Residential Area Safety

The Issue

Within the past 10 months 2 young women who were students and members of our community have been hit and tragically killed by drivers under the influence of alcohol with both incidents occurring less than a mile away from campus. Following the first incident plans were made to make Fraternity Village Drive a safer street given the high amount of foot traffic in the areas to which unfortunately not many of those plans were executed. Off campus student residential areas have frequent concerns regarding pedestrian safety and now is the time to take action to prevent a tragic incident like these from happening again.

This petition has been created as a form for students in the community to be able to use their voice as well as come together as a community to work towards the goal of increased safety for our peers. The petition will be used to show the city of Kalamazoo the amount of students who feel the need to make these changes. We as students of WMU and members of greek life insist these pedestrian safety precautions be made including but not limited to:

  • Traffic light and crosswalk at the intersection of West Michigan Avenue and Euclid- This will aim to allow students to cross the street safely at all hours of the day. This is a high traffic corner where students frequently cross without a crosswalk.
  • Speed Bumps on Lafayette, Euclid, Greenwood, Fraternity Village Drive. -These streets are primarily student residential areas and though speed limits are set it is not uncommon to see cars going well over those limits at a dangerous speed.
  • Increased street lighting on Lafayette, Euclid, Greenwood, Fraternity Village Drive, and West Michigan Ave.
  • Permanent electric "slow down" speedometers on Lafayette, Greenwood, Fraternity Village Drive, and West Michigan
  • Consistent and frequent brush clearance on Fraternity Village Drive which has not yet been done/is now overgrown
  • Sidewalk preparation and installation on Fraternity Village Drive
  • Cross walk at the corner of California and Fraternity Village Drive
  • Stop sign and cross walk at Fraternity Village Drive and Michigamme woods
  • Restriping of Fraternity Village Drive

While this is a long list of requests this list has been compiled by the students allowing them to express where they feel the most need for increased safety.
