WMMO Called It a Van Halen Rock Block. We Object.
The Issue
WMMO 98.9 FM in Orlando, owned by Cox Media Group, has long been a trusted classic rock station. Listeners rely on WMMO to honor rock history, represent artists accurately, and treat legendary bands with the respect they’ve earned.
That’s why this stood out.
On Saturday, January 24, 2026, at approximately 3:18 PM EST, WMMO aired a segment promoted as a Van Halen Rock Block. During that block, the station played three Van Halen songs in a row:
- “Right Now”
- “Top of the World”
- “Dreams”
All three featured Sammy Hagar.
None featured David Lee Roth.
This is not a minor oversight.
Let’s be honest: this is about choosing sides. For many fans, Van Halen simply isn’t Van Halen without Diamond Dave. Period.
But this petition isn’t asking everyone to agree on eras.
It’s asking for rock and roll fairness.
Even fans of the Red Rocker can agree on this:
Three songs, all Red Rocker, zero Diamond Dave is not "balance".
Reasonable people can debate the right mix:
- Three Diamond Dave songs? Preferred.
- Two Diamond Dave, one Red Rocker? A fair compromise.
- Three Red Rocker songs, zero Diamond Dave is not a Rock Block.
It is a rock and roll felony — and the cradle will rock.
Adding to the confusion, WMMO is currently promoting a David Lee Roth concert at Hard Rock Live Orlando on May 3, 2026, encouraging listeners to celebrate Diamond Dave and enter to win tickets.
Promoting a David Lee Roth show while airing a Van Halen Rock Block that completely excludes him is, at best, contradictory.
Attached is a screenshot from wmmo.com documenting the playlist from the broadcast in question. The timing, song order, and complete absence of David Lee Roth are clearly shown in Exhibit 5150.
We respectfully ask WMMO to:
- Publicly acknowledge that airing a Van Halen Rock Block with three Red Rocker songs and zero Diamond Dave misrepresented the band’s legacy
- Remedy the offense by airing a corrective Van Halen Rock Block featuring no fewer than two (2) David Lee Roth–era songs
- Align programming with promotions by ensuring that a station actively promoting a David Lee Roth concert also plays David Lee Roth when celebrating Van Halen
- Recommit to Rock Blocks that accurately represent foundational band eras and the artists who defined them
As Van Halen put it best:“C’mon Dave, give me a break.”
In this case: C’mon WMMO — give us a break. Play some Diamond Dave. “Everybody wants some!! (we) want some too!!”
If you agree that a Van Halen Rock Block should actually sound like Van Halen, please sign.
Thank you, Johnny H. - Rock Fan - Windermere, FL
