

Withhold the Black Vote for a Better Deal
The Issue
As a Black man in America, I am deeply moved by our community's reality - a reality marked by systemic discrimination and violence. We are routinely overlooked, exploited and harmed by the country we were forced to build. The racial wealth gap is only getting worse, to the point that, if we do nothing, we will have nothing by 2053.
We demand an end to a twofold issue: the need for reparations and an end to police violence. We deem it just for our government to recognize and rectify the racially discriminatory policies of slavery, Jim Crow laws, redlining - and more- that have hindered Black Americans' socio-economic progress to this day.
Historically, both Democrats and Republicans have failed to fully address our concerns. It is a stark fact that police killings of black Americans are significantly disproportionate, as stated by a study from the National Academy of Sciences. Our lives are constantly at risk, with black men being 2.5 times more likely to be killed than their white counterparts.
Lastly, we demand full and equal protection under the law. As stated by the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, "no State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States," which means us too.
In light of these issues, we, as Black Americans, will withhold our votes until we see a commitment from any party addressing these concerns seriously. This is not a threat but a call for political leaders to uphold the basic tenets of humanity, justice, and equality. It's time that our lives, history, and future are valued.
