Withdean Park: Recognise It as a Dog Park and Install Signage for Cyclists to dismount
The Issue
We, the undersigned, are calling on Brighton & Hove City Council to take action to improve safety at Withdean Park by formally recognizing the central fenced area as a dog-friendly space and installing appropriate signage to guide cyclists and other park users.
For years, Withdean Park has been an essential space for the dog-owning community in Brighton. The central fenced area has become an unofficial dog park, where local dog owners can safely train, exercise, and socialize their pets. It is a valuable space for both dogs and their owners, providing a controlled environment for responsible dog care and community building.
However, we have noticed that cyclists and e-bike riders sometimes pass through this area, unaware of the high number of dogs or unsympathetic to the use of the space as a dog park. This has caused conflicts between cyclists and dog owners and, in some cases, has led to unsafe situations for both dogs and humans, especially for dogs that are in training or reactive to fast-moving bikes.
To prevent further conflicts and ensure safety for all, we are requesting that:
Signage be installed at the entrances to the central fenced area of Withdean Park, asking cyclists to dismount when entering the park. This will raise awareness of the space being predominantly used by dog owners and prevent accidents or conflicts.
Recognition of the central area as a dog-friendly space, helping to establish it as a shared area where all users can feel safe and informed.
Park users are reminded that, while the park is open to everyone, it is used predominantly by dog walkers, and those who are uncomfortable with dogs can choose alternative routes.
This action will help improve the experience of all park users, ensuring a safe and harmonious environment for dogs, dog owners, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.
We urge Brighton & Hove City Council to consider this proposal and take steps to ensure that Withdean Park remains a safe and inclusive space for everyone.
