Our lives were torn apart when our son, brother, friend, Daniel Kearney was tragically killed in a car crash in West Milford, NJ. He was a passenger in a vehicle, where the driver, fully aware of their provisional restrictions, unhesitatingly broke the law by having too many passengers in the car. This resulted in a horrific crash that took our Daniel away from us. Every year, thousands of fatal crashes occur due to drivers under provisional licenses recklessly ignoring established laws and restrictions according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). We call on lawmakers to toughen the penalties for breaking provisional driving laws, particularly when it results in serious injury or death. It's time to change the law. Driving with a provisional license while knowingly violating its conditions should be considered a criminal act, specifically when it results in severe harm or even death to passengers or pedestrians. That way, we can prevent tragedies like the one our beloved Daniel had to endure. It is time for us to prioritize life, safety, and the rule of law above all.
