Growing up in the Appalachia area, Wilson's Creek has always been my sanctuary—a place where I frequently kayak, fish, and camp. As a minister, I have baptized people in these waters. It's a refuge for me and for many, a place to escape the noise and tension of city streets. Imagine our sacred space being turned into a site of intimidation, causing distress and fear among families. This is why I am urging you to stand with us against the actions of the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office and their operations with immigration agencies at Wilson's Creek, North Carolina.

The Appalachian people have a rich history tied to this river and its surroundings. We deserve the opportunity to self-govern and maintain our access to these public lands, free from the overreach of immigration policies and restrictions that do not reflect our community's values. Our Hispanic population is a vital part of our community, enriching it culturally and economically. The immigration operations currently being conducted not only disrupt the lives of these individuals but also threaten the peace and unity of our community.

The presence of immigration officials and their actions at Wilson's Creek makes a traditionally inviting and inclusive space feel hostile. This form of enforcement erodes trust and instills fear in a region renowned for its hospitality and tight-knit communities. It's a direct strike on the communal bonds that our society thrives upon, and it paints our beloved sanctuary as a place of torment rather than tranquility.

These enforcement activities are detrimental to our way of life and violate the essence of what it means to be part of the Appalachian community. We invite everyone to unite and voice their opposition to this encroachment on our lands and values. Let us protect Wilson's Creek from becoming a symbol of fear and injustice.

Reflect on its role as a central part of our community's identity and on the enduring memories it holds for those who call this region home.
