Remove Wilson and Millikan High School’s Prejudiced Uniforms

The Issue

The LBUSD uniform was originally put in place to prevent bullying and to avoid distraction in the classroom. Had this proven to be true, all LBUSD high schools would still utilize a uniform. However, the uniform has instead made way for sexism and racism. Considerably more students of color and female students are dress-coded daily than their white and male counterparts. Despite the intention, it has not achieved any of the initial goals, and therefore should be removed from Wilson and Millikan’s policies. Along with the prejudiced enforcement of the uniform, many of the banned clothing choices, such as durags, directly affect students of specific races and ethnicities. Wilson and Millikan high school are the only two high schools in the Long Beach Unified School District to still utilize a uniform, directly supporting the ideas presented in this petition. Had the uniform benefited bullying statistics, gang affiliation, or other serious issues, schools of similar demographics such as Poly or Jordan high school would still be implementing a uniform. Regardless of the accusation of gang affiliation, the observed definition in this sense employs a prejudice in order to survive, along with the fact that no considerable change in the appearance of gang activity has been made since the addition of a uniform to the school. Therefore, the students of Wilson and Millikan high school move to eliminate the uniform and furthermore reform the dress code to abolish race/ethnicity and gender prejudices.
