Wildlife awareness signs for Gilston Road

Wildlife awareness signs for Gilston Road
The issue
The heart wrenching sight of wildlife roadkill is a common, tragic occurrence along Gilston Road for many locals including myself. Each day, we witness the deadly consequences of unaware drivers colliding with kangaroos, koalas, and other native wildlife. Out of community spirit, many of us often have to undertake the unpleasant task of dragging the roadkill off the road, even going as far as carrying gloves and spray paint to mark the ones checked for joeys.
The problem is not just an emotional one, but also a significant concern for the local ecosystem. Our wildlife is a crucial part of our environment, and its unnecessary loss impacts biodiversity and overall environmental health. Studies show that roads contribute to 89% of all unexpected fatal wildlife destruction across Australia (World Wildlife Fund, 2018), illustrating the evident issue and the desperate need for measures to prevent it.
There's an urgent need to install Wildlife Awareness signs along Gilston Road, especially to create awareness for the drivers who use Gilston Road as a connecting route. These signs will alert road users to the presence of our lovely kangaroos, koalas and other creatures, helping to moderate speeds, increase awareness, and ultimately reduce the number of accidents involving wildlife, making Gilston Road safer for both us, the residents, and the creatures who call this place home.
Change starts with us. Let's drive this mission and protect our wildlife, the ones who share our environment but don't have a voice. Please sign this petition and lend your voice to the beautiful, voiceless creatures of Gilston Road.
