Petition to Local Member Katie Hall and the Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne

We petitioners, locals in the Footscray and Maribyrnong City area, are very concerned about the road safety issues on Hopkins Street, especially on the southern side between Moreland and Whitehall Streets.

The extreme narrowness of the footpath, lack of an indented bus stop and extremely tight space at the Whitehall crossing lights, makes this an especially dangerous stretch for pedestrians. A fatal accident has already occurred in this space, and children from the adjacent primary school have to daily navigate these dangers.

The Department of Transport and Planning has declined to negotiate the possibility of buying some space from the adjacent primary school to widen the footpath and build a proper indented bus stop.

We urge our local member and the responsible Minister to take action, and ensure the safety of local school children and the neighbouring community.
