For over 30+ years Wickham Volunteer Fire & Rescue service has run an annual Water fight and Lolly run on Christmas Eve for the town of Wickham. The water fight usually commences late morning and finishes late afternoon with majority of the Wickham community participating. Family and friends also travel from surrounding towns to join in on the day, as do the Pilbara District - WA Police Force.

This year a video of the event unexpectedly went viral and received lots of positive feedback. Praising the town of Wickham and the Firees for community engagement and spirit. Unfortunately, DFES also saw this video and has sent out circulars that will effect the Water fight running in years to come. This will also effect other towns such as Karratha and Roebourne who’s Fire Brigades also do annual water fights around Christmas.

The Lolly run & Water Fight is loved by all, from the smallest of our community members having the magic of meeting Santa in a true Aussie way, to the older children and adults having a blast battling the fire brigade & police in the water fight.

Each community member is aware that the Firetrucks will be spraying water from their tank and throwing water balloons. This is a personal choice from each member in the community, making an informed decision to partake in a great community event. If a community member doesn’t wish to partake, they do not have to. But I don’t think you’ll find a single person in the town of Wickham who would frown upon the event of the year. An event that brings community groups, friends and families together. An event that has been running for 30+ years and has never had any issues.
