What Do Indian Men Really Think About Women’s Rights? Let’s Find Out!
The Issue
Why This Petition Matters?
Every day on social media, we see the blatant misogyny in the comment sections—men justifying harassment, blaming women for crimes against them, and reinforcing outdated gender norms. Viral videos show men of all ages casually expressing regressive views when asked about women’s rights, clothing choices, and autonomy.
But here’s the problem: we don’t have real, large-scale data on just how widespread these attitudes are in India. Without this data, these issues remain dismissed as “just a few bad opinions” when, in reality, they shape policies, laws, and everyday life for women.
That’s why I’m demanding a nationwide survey on misogyny, gender norms, and societal attitudes toward women’s choices in India.
We need research organizations like Pew Research, CSDS, and NCAER to take this seriously and collect real data—data that can be used to push for change. This isn’t just about opinions online; it’s about how deeply ingrained misogyny affects women’s safety, freedom, and opportunities.
These are the essential questions we want included in the survey. Additional questions are welcome, but none of these should be left unanswered.
Examining Misogyny, Gender Norms, and Societal Attitudes Toward Women's Choices in India
- Clothing & Autonomy
1. Should women of any age be allowed to wear revealing clothes if they want to?
2. Do you believe a woman’s clothing choice reflects her morals or character?
3. Should dress codes for women be enforced in public places?
4. Do you think men have the right to comment on or control how women dress?
- Freedom & Social Expectations
5. Should women be allowed to stay out late at night without restrictions?
6. Is it acceptable for women to live alone, independent of family or a husband?
7. Do you believe women should prioritize marriage over career advancement?
8. Should women require family or husband’s permission for major life decisions (e.g., travel, career, marriage)?
- Victim-Blaming & Gender Stereotypes
9. If a woman is harassed while wearing revealing clothes, do you believe she is partly responsible?
10. Should a woman’s sexual history be considered in legal cases (e.g., harassment, assault)?
11. Do you think women falsely accuse men of harassment more often than men actually harass women?
12. Should women be expected to be more “modest” than men in behavior and speech?
13. Should physical discipline be used to correct a woman's inappropriate behavior in some cases?
- Equality & Traditional Gender Roles
13. Do you think men should have more authority than women in a household?
14. Is it acceptable for women to earn more than their husbands?
15. Do you believe women should be financially dependent on men?
16. Should men be the primary decision-makers in families?
