I would like to share a poem written by John Bell:
" Bridging the Span of Time
Friendless and abandoned, there is nothing sadder than a bridge that has outlived its usefulness. Many of these relics from a by-gone era, strung along the Ohio are only transporting memories these days, icons that once played seminal roles in The Valley’s growth and now are proof positive that rust never sleeps. Too frail to use and too costly to remove, for some of us they stand like time portals into the past and others only see them as eyesores that have no future. Me, I love everyone of them, and can appreciate the beauty of engineering and architectural design that melded them into a partner in progress and true works of art—once proud pathways for The Valley’s economic well being. I hear tales of my grandfather walking the old train bridge from Martins Ferry to his factory job in Wheeling, rain or shine, freezing or sweltering, sometimes feeling the shimmy and sway as a train loaded with coal dozens of cars long rushes by on its way to help build America. Next time you pass a bridge to nowhere, remember it once took us somewhere— special."
