Save Female Footy
The issue
Last week the WAFC decided to scrap the WAWFL Reserves Competition for the upcoming season. A decision made without consultation with clubs, staff or players.
For those who aren't aware the Reserves is a "pathway" a solid one at that, which gives girls from the youth competition a bridge to the league level. An opportunity to develop in all aspects of the game. An essential part of every club, the heart and soul of a football club.
Many past and present players have put years of work into building a foundation and a way forward for women's football.
"Since 1987 the Western Australian women’s football league (WAWFL) had spent 32 years developing women’s football across the state from 4 teams to finishing with 9 teams and 3 leagues. Mostly run by volunteers. This is critical for the growth and development of young players transitioning from Rogers Cup league (under 18’s) to women’s league football. These girls need playing time to improve their skills to ensure we have the best possible league teams available. The reserves division is also a platform for injured league players to return to their full potential." Lou Knitter
To scrap the competition would be a massive step backwards for the women's game and certainly not one it needs or deserves.
