Weekend Holidays for Students - A promoter for socio-emotional wellbeing

The Issue

With educational institutions functioning on weekends, there is a huge impact on the lives of students in schools and colleges. Having non-working weekends offered a means to:

  1. Reduce Burnout : Due to increased hours spent towards academics, students experience a lot of pressure to excel. The percentage who received mental health services in an education setting in the past year increased from 12.1% in 2009 to 15.4% in 2019. A weekend break would enable students to return rejuvenated to places of learning with creativity, productivity, physical health and fresh mindspace.
  2. Strengthen Social Skills : With the increased screen-time and busy weekends, students have moved away from a social life with in person interactions. This has an impact on crucial skills like communication, problem solving, critical thinking that guides the inter-personal relationships. Unable to cope up with stress, the impact of reduced social interaction leads to mental health issues and anxiety. Weekends provide opportunities for time with friends and family, a sharing space that makes people empathize and supported.
  3. Increased awareness of the diversity and learning in the world around us : When weekends are off, students can experience cultural diversity through events, tourism, etc. This offers a scope for real time learning. Holidays aid the release of hormones like dopamine which instills the joy and relaxation which improves mental health.

Keeping the above factors at the centre for a healthier society, please take an action to provide the Weekend holidays for all students
