Boycott Sportsmansparadise.com
The Issue
We'd like to ask that Sportsmansparadise.com remove their "Parakeets Nesting" webpage from their website. There is evidence that the animals being filmed are part of a flock of hundreds of other parakeets that are being kept in unhealthful conditions. Some of the birds surrendered to NUBS have severe medical problems including mega bacterial infection, gram-negative bacterial infections, severe birth defects such as leg and wing deformities, and severe injuries due to mishandling and unsanitary conditions. For example, one baby, in addition to bacterial infections, has had her leg die from gangrene from a too-tight leg band and a subsequent infected cut. The leg was very crudely amputated without pain medication or follow up antibiotics. The resultant stump was once again broken by mishandling.
There is no excuse for keeping any animal under these conditions and by Sportsmansparadise.com hosting these webcams, they are also supporting the continued animal cruelty that is ongoing in the private home in Tulsa, Oklahoma where these birds are being kept.
The birds posted in the pictures above were surrendered to NUBS by their owner, the operator of the Parakeets Nesting webcams on Sportsmansparadise.com, and they have been under continuous care by members of the NUBS Squad. Despite excellent veterinary care by an avian veterinarian, hundreds of hours of care, medication for infections as well as wound care, they are still not out of the woods and may either take a turn for the worse or need to be euthanized as part of the difficult but humane, responsible decision to do what is best for these babies.
