I GREW UP IN LUCKEY.
This is going to get personal.
When I was in high school, I started to have some pretty serious G.I. issues which were very abnormal. They never made any sense and at the ripe age of 17, I had my first colonoscopy. I am now 28 years old and I am about to undergo my third colonoscopy to find out if I have colon cancer. Aside from having severe gastrointestinal issues I was also diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called psoriasis in high school as well. My mother on multiple occasions took me to the doctor for chronic fatigue. The list honestly goes on and on.
Now I know I’m not the only one and Luckey, who has or is experiencing health issues that can be linked back to ingesting the contaminated water, and we deserve justice. They allowed us to poison our bodies with radioactive water, and now many of us are living with severe health conditions, we deserve justice.
With that being said, I have started a petition to add Luckey Ohio to the RECA. (This is time sensitive because RECA is ending in 2027)
Now many of you may be asking what does that mean? Don’t worry I’ll tell you!
RECA stands for the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act. It was created to provide financial and medical support to people who were unknowingly exposed to harmful levels of radiation due to government activity—just like what happened in Luckey.
Adding Luckey, Ohio to RECA would mean:
• Acknowledgement from the federal government that we were harmed.
• Access to compensation for the many people suffering from radiation-related illnesses like cancer, autoimmune diseases, and chronic fatigue.
• Funding for health monitoring, medical care, and support.
• A pathway to finally begin healing our community, physically and emotionally.
If you, your family, or someone you love has been sick—and you grew up in or around Luckey—you deserve to be heard.
Please sign and share this petition. Help us get Luckey the recognition and protection it deserves.
We, the undersigned, call on the United States Congress to immediately expand the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) to include Luckey, Ohio.
From the 1940s through the Cold War, nuclear weapons contractors processed uranium, thorium, and beryllium at the Luckey Brush Beryllium site. This activity left behind toxic and radioactive waste that has contaminated the area for generations—including groundwater that many residents drank and used daily.
Today, numerous residents suffer from unexplained and life-altering illnesses:
• Gastrointestinal disease
• Autoimmune disorders
• Cancers
• Anemia and chronic fatigue
• Neurological symptoms and developmental concerns
In 2025, The Toledo Blade confirmed that radiation levels remain dangerously elevated beneath the town—yet Luckey remains excluded from federal compensation programs like RECA.
We believe:
• The government has a moral obligation to acknowledge this exposure.
• Luckey residents deserve the same protections and compensation as other nuclear-impacted communities.
• Every day without action adds to the suffering.
We demand that Congress:
1. Amend RECA to officially include Luckey, Ohio and impacted ZIP codes.
2. Provide medical compensation and ongoing health support to affected residents.
3. Fund further environmental testing and cleanup to protect current and future generations.
The U.S. government exposed us to radiation. It must now recognize the harm it caused.
Please sign and share this petition to demand justice for the people of Luckey, Ohio.
