The Issue

We, the undersigned, demand the reinstatement of Alasdair McCrone and Gordon Maclean to their positions at Comar and the subsequent resignation of Comar trustees and directors.

Both Alasdair and Gordon have contributed and developed the arts and culture infrastructure, not only on Mull where their work is an important part of community and island life, but nationally. They have both worked with artists and creatives to develop their skills and supported tours of work to rural and urban communities across Scotland and beyond over the past twenty years. Without their drive being at the centre of Comar's mission and future development, the future of Comar and its potential to continue to be at the centre of cultural life in Mull, Argyll & Bute and indeed Scotland, is at threat.

Their focus and drive has enriched the culture of the island, its local residents and widened Scotland's cultural net. There is a real danger, that with the removal of this wealth of experience, this focus may not continue

It's almost inconceivable to think of An Tobar without Gordon Maclean. Artists such as Martyn Bennett may never have flourished without Gordon's support and understanding, not to mention a host of musical talent that he has nurtured over the years. The same is true of Alasdair McCrone and his support for local and national artists, not to mention the almost uniquely welcoming atmosphere he has created in and around Drumfin. Along with being cracking human beings, they ARE the art scene on Mull.

This is another tragic example of administration and bureaucracy in the Arts stamping all over creativity and artistic vision. It is also a decision that is undemocratic and does not represent the will of the Islanders, nor the wider Artistic Community in Scotland.

Both Alasdair and Gordon are much loved and respected within Scotland's music and arts scene and they are also highly valued and active members of the island community, contributing to much more than their work remits outline.
