The Issue

🔥 Save Brevard County Fire Rescue! Demand Fair Pay & Accountability! 🔥

Brevard County Fire Rescue (BCFR) is in crisis. Over 120+ firefighters and paramedics have quit in the past year because of low wages, unsafe staffing levels, and grueling mandatory overtime.

🚨 First responders save lives—but Brevard County refuses to save them. 🚨

”We the people” are making the CRITICAL condition of BCFR known.

The Brevard County Commissioners have failed to fund our fire rescue services adequately. Instead, taxpayer money is being wasted or mismanaged while our firefighters struggle to survive on wages that force them to work second and third jobs just to pay their bills. How can they protect us if they can’t even provide for their families?

***Brevard County offered a starting salary of approximately $41,089.36 annually for firefighter/EMTs,***

****Neighboring Indian River County provided a starting salary of $54,531. (Indian River County also offers a six-week Kelly schedule, granting firefighters an extra shift off every six weeks without a reduction in pay.)

******Statewide, the average annual salary for fire rescue personnel in Florida is around $78,897, equating to approximately $37.93 per hour.*******

“We the people” demand for Action NOW!

In addition to base salaries, many departments offer incentives such as paramedic and technical rescue team bonuses, annual performance-based step increases, vacation and sick leave, paid holidays, and comprehensive insurance plans. For example, the Winter Haven Fire Department provides a competitive salary with a robust annual step pay plan, 13 Kelly days annually, 120 hours of vacation leave per year, and other benefits. )

We demand immediate action:

✅ A full state audit of Brevard County’s spending to uncover financial mismanagement.

✅ Fair wages and better working conditions for Brevard County Fire Rescue employees.

✅ Emergency funding to ensure adequate staffing and stop the mass exodus of first responders.

✅ Accountability from the Brevard County Commission for their failure to act.

💥 Every second counts in an emergency. Our firefighters and paramedics deserve better. Our community deserves better. 💥

Hello Petition Supporters, The Decision Maker team here at Change.org reached out to Brevard County officials. Our team makes sure petitions like this one are seen by the right decision maker and to help encourage engagement with supporters like you. They provided a number of documents with summaries around the issue and contract negotiations. Here is a summary of the Office's Response: According to a Brevard County official, the County has made multiple attempts to resume negotiations with union representatives since the IAFF declared an impasse on October 15, 2024. A negotiation session is now scheduled for Friday, February 21, 2025, with a Special Magistrate hearing set for March 3rd and 4th. Key details from the latest contract proposal from Brevard County (dated February 3, 2025) include: - Proposed wage increases, with comparisons to previous offers. - A wage re-opener for years 2-3 of the contract, allowing further negotiations on pay adjustments. - The introduction of “Kelly Days,” a structured work schedule aimed at improving work-life balance. These would be implemented in phases based on staffing levels. The County has stated that its goal is to reach an agreement and has outlined a timeline of efforts to engage with the union since the impasse declaration. At this time, the most recent union proposal submitted during mediation in January has not been publicly released. The County has stated that it has no objections if the union elects to share it.
