We Support the True North Behavioral Health Grant Application

The Issue

I am writing as a concerned resident who cares deeply about our community — especially those who are struggling with mental health or addiction and can’t get the help they need.

Recently, three members of our Board of Supervisors voted to oppose the grant application for the True North Behavioral Health Campus — a project that would bring over $200 million in state funding and more than 200 healthcare jobs to Shasta County. And none of that money comes from county taxpayers.

Their vote doesn’t stop the application, but it sends the message that our community doesn’t want or need this support — and I don’t believe that’s true.

This petition exists to make one message absolutely clear: The majority of Shasta County residents support the True North Behavioral Health Campus.

Our Reality Today

Anyone that lives in Shasta County knows that we have a mental health crisis and a lack of resources to help people. Last year alone, 348 people — including 119 children and teens — were sent out of the county for mental health and substance use treatment. Some were sent all the way to Southern California.

Families are separated at the worst moments of their lives. Kids are even sleeping in county offices because there are no appropriate beds here.

Meanwhile, our local hospitals and law enforcement are overwhelmed, already caring for people in crisis from more than 100 ZIP codes. We have an opportunity to change this.

What True North Would Bring

This campus would keep people here at home when they’re in crisis.
It would take pressure off first responders and emergency rooms.
It would give families hope — and help — when they need it most.

To me, that’s just common sense. There is no reason to oppose:

✅ 24/7 crisis care

✅ Mental health beds for kids and adults

✅ Addiction treatment support

✅ Over 200 local healthcare jobs

✅ More than $150 million in state funding

✅ All with zero cost to Shasta County taxpayers

This Isn’t Political — It’s Personal

I normally don’t get involved in politics, but I cannot sit back and allow our Shasta County Board of supervisor to communicate for our community without giving us an opportunity for our voices to be heard.

Mental health services shouldn’t be a political battleground. This is not a partisan issue and it isn’t about politics, it’s about human beings who deserve care, dignity, and a chance to heal close to the people who love them.

I simply don’t want that opposition letter to be seen as the voice of Shasta County — because I know our community cares more than that.

I urge you to join me in sending a strong message to our local officials: support the grant application for the True North Behavioral Health Campus. Let’s ensure that those who need help can get it right here at home, without unnecessary burdens placed on families during already difficult times.

By signing, you’re saying:

✔ We believe in caring for people here at home
✔ We want to keep families together during crisis
✔ We want the state tax dollars we already pay to come back and support our county
✔ We want our voices to be heard in decisions that affect us

This is about people.
This is about compassion.
This is about doing what’s right.

Please join me in showing that Shasta County residents support the True North Behavioral Health Campus — and a safer, healthier future for everyone who calls this place home.
