We stand with the students peacefully protesting in support of a ceasefire in Gaza
Le problème
To University Presidents, Deans, the American Association of University Professors and University Administrators:
***We stand with the students in the US and around the world who are protesting in support of an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and for the human rights of Palestinians to a free life in their own state.***
We condemn all forms of anti-Semitism, as well as Hamas' heinous attacks of October 7th and call on Hamas to release all Isreaeli hostages immediately.
Opposing Israel's occupation of Palestine and the killing of tens of thousands of civilians is not anti-Semitic. It is, rather, a fervent call for real peace in the region.
***Thousands of student protesters in the US have been arrested for calling for this peace.***
We urge university presidents work with their students to ensure that their right to peacefully protest is respected. We encourage constructive dialogue with students about their demands for divestment from Israel and a ceasefire.
Any instance of anti-Semitism or Jewish students being threatened must be dealt with severely. However, universities should immediately reverse suspensions or expulsions and drop any charges against peaceful protesters.
***Anti-war protest has a long and venerable history and freedom of expression is a core democratic tenet.***
Brown University and Northwestern have successfully negotiated with peaceful protesters providing a road map on how it can be done. Respect the right to peacefully protest in word, action and spirit.
We are concerned activists, academics, observers, workers and students from everywhere. We stand for justice anywhere there is a struggle for justice. The students’ cause is just.
Yours sincerely,
STIR: Students for Thoughtful Initiative and Response 2.0
