Last January, Department of Education Secretary Eduardo “Sonny” Angara announced major reforms to Senior High School under the new Matatag Curriculum. Among the most significant updates (covered by various media outlets such as Rappler and GMA) was the introduction of a new core subject dedicated to Philippine History.
That was a very big news. And for all of us who have long called for its return, it felt like the breakthrough we’ve been waiting for.
While we await the official release of the updated curriculum guide, one thing is clear: if Philippine History is indeed reinstated as a core subject in Senior High School, it will be a historic win. After nearly a decade of tireless advocacy (especially from groups like the High School Philippine History Movement) we are closer than ever to restoring a vital space where students can make sense of our nation’s past and build critical thinking skills to confront disinformation and historical distortion.
We've waited this long. A few more weeks won’t hurt.
Let’s stay hopeful—and ready.
