We Say No To GMOs PETITION to Congress & Obama, CARE & Change.org

This petition had 291 supporters

This is a petition to let it be known that we do not support the Lugar-Casey Global Food Security Act of 2009, S.384 and that some of us were fooled into signing a CARE petition1.  supporting this bill.

This is to let it be known that, therefore, our signatures on the CARE petition1. which supports this bill are not valid and do not represent our true intents.

[
I am extending the date of activation of this petition and will continue to do so as long as this bill is still pending in Congress and for as long as the CARE petition is open.
I have also found some new hot-links to the UCS info below where my first link got cold, which I have now added to the petition. ... update, 5/10 ~5:00hrsPDT]

Here is the rest of the pledge with updates, 4/29 ~13:00hrsPDT & 4/30 ~11:15hrsPDT date correction made ... booboo read 2/29... impossible ... lol
(which really does not belong on the petition at all)
and below I have added to the petition here, the clause 7. from the pledge
(which really was not meant go to Congress)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These bills are intentionally made to be intimidating to & inscrutable by most people.
It takes a lot of time, energy, effort to really read them and consider all the potential ramifications

You can find my own analysis of critical parts of the Lugar-Casey Global Food Security Act of 2009, S.384 here:
http://food.change.org/actions/view/seewhatyouthink_-_excerpts_analysis_lugar-casey_global-food-security-act-2009_s384

My compliments to Ned Hamson for his intellegent question and his motivation to looka at the bill itself.
Ned's Question: "What parts of the bill support GM foods?"

This is what I call the "Monsanto Ammendment" which I have added to the petition text, 4/30. ... VOILA, mia amikojn:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(2) by striking the period at the end and inserting `,

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE PETITION THAT YOU ARE SIGNING BELOW READS:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We, the undersigned are aware that CARE's Corporate Sponsors are:
Cargill, ConAgra, Corn Products International, Pfizer, Abbot, Baxter, Coca Cola and they get money from the U.S. International Affairs Budget (part of Foreign Aid) which appears to be with USAID, which is pushing GM crops on the rest of the world.

We are now also aware of the amendment to the bill which reads:

SEC. 202. AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH.
Section 103A of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 (22 U.S.C. 2151a-1) is amended in the first sentence--

(1) by striking `, and  (3) make' and inserting `, (3) make'; and

(2) by striking the period at the end and inserting `,
and (4) include research on biotechnological advances appropriate to local ecological conditions, including genetically modified technology.'.

Those of us who HAVE NOT SIGNED the CARE PETITION referred to below1., are pledging our support for this We
Say No to GMOs
petition and do not want any of our taxes spent on GMO subsidies of any kind, ever, anywhere.

Those of us who HAVE SIGNED the CARE PETITION referred to below1., agree with this We Say No to GMOs petition and do not want any of our taxes spent on GMO subsidies of any kind, ever, anywhere.

Whereas:

1. We the undersigned who have already signed the CARE petition at
http://www.change.org/care/actions/view/tell_congress_to_stand_against_global_hunger
and/or at
http://www.change.org/actions/view/support_global_food_security?suggested=true
Targeting:
Members of the U.S. Senate and Members of the U.S. House of Representatives
Sponsored by:
CARE

2.
We did not know that this bill, the Lugar-Casey Global Food Security Act of 2009, S.384 has an amendment which mandates that in order to receive aid these countries must accept GMO Corporations taking over ALL of their food production without oversight or regulation.

3.
We understand that the peoples of these countries do not want GMOs or Big Agro business in their lands.

4. We strongly feel that the USA does not have the right to enact legislation for other countries against their will.

Therefore:

5. We the undersigned do not support the Lugar-Casey Global Food Security Act of 2009, S.384 now that we understand more about it.

6.
We the undersigned demand that our names be removed from the CARE petition called "Support Global Food Security" and the petition entitled, "Tell Congress to Stand Against Global Hunger" --  both sponsored by CARE and both in support of the Lugar-Casey Global Food Security Act of 2009, S.384 and both are the identical petition in spite of the change of name on the change.org site.

7. Since CARE has already sent these signatures to the targets ... we demand that CARE notify these targets that ALL OF OUR NAMES have been withdrawn from their petition(s) and that CARE remove our names from their petition. (4/30 update)*

Special thanks to Ned Hamson for creating this action.

An effort to fight global poverty and hunger may become a Trojan horse to force genetically enginneered crops on countries and farmers that do not want them.
Can you ask Congress not to force GE Crops on countries and Farmers who don't want them?

PAN ALERT: Tell Congress: Get GE Research Out of Foreign Aid

No tax dollars for genetic engineering seed research

KENYAN FARMERS THIKA DECLARATION:

We, the Kenya Small Scale Farmers Forum leaders, representing crop farmers, pastoralists and fisherfolk, do declare today, August 20th 2004, that farming is our livelihood and not just a trade.
Farming has been passed down from generation to generation, and is now threatened by Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).

GMOs are a danger to food security and our indigenous gene pool.

Patented GMO crops threaten farmers’ ability to save and share their indigenous seeds which have stood the test of time.
Thus they will reduce our seed security and food security, without the long and short term effects on our health and environment being known.
GMOs will hand control of our food systems to the multinational companies, who have created these seeds for financial gain, and not for our need.
These new seeds may create conflict between farmers due to the risks of cross pollination from GMO to non GMO crops leading to contamination between farms.
GMOs will increase costs for farmers.
This new kind of agriculture has been produced using a complicated and expensive process called genetic engineering.
To make their profits back from the farmers, the companies patent the GMO seeds, which leads to higher costs for farmers, who are then forbidden from saving and sharing their seeds for planting the following season.
If the seeds fail, farmers are left in great destitution.
The agrochemicals associated with GM crops will oblige farmers to pay the high prices set by the companies, and replace the need for paid farm labour, thereby threatening our livelihoods.
GMOs threaten Kenya’s environment.
A clean environment is a fundamental right for all.
GMOs on the contrary are contaminative, unfriendly to our biodiversity, and pose a threat to the existence of our indigenous seeds, to organic farming systems, and to human and animal health in general.
Our government is being arm-twisted to accept GMOs by multinationals, without considering the effects on small scale farmers.
Small scale farmers in Kenya should be included in policy formulation on agriculture research and food security.
Government should invest in irrigation, improvement of infrastructure, appropriate technologies, marketing, subsidies, credit, farm inputs and better rangeland management, and NOT ON GMOs.

We believe that God created life, and no one can own it, not even Monsanto, Syngenta or other multinational companies.
We therefore reject all GMOs in agriculture, and call upon the Kenyan government to respect our indigenous expertise.
Therefore to be able to fully understand the effects of GMOs on our livelihoods, health and environment, we demand a twenty-year moratorium on GMOs in Kenya.

shared between sustainable food, humanitarian relief, stop genocide, global health.

change.org does not recognize this as an issue that is connected with genocide or global health and therefore I am not allowed to crosspost this under these causes.
In my personal opinion this is dangerous ignorance to think that a global GMO food catastrophe does not constitute genocide (and in this case genocide of far more species than merely overpopulated Homo sapiens) and/or does not directly affect global health.
