A person in one of our Facebook community chats quoted the percentage of cars using the T3 lane at 63% - this image, on News Talk ZB's website, shows a very different picture. Do you think that percentage might be conflated with bus users?
Whilst it is fantastic that we have bus commuters that use the T3 lane, it is pretty clear that 63% of vehicle commuters are NOT using the T3 lane.
This is a quote from News Talk ZB's article
"Auckland Transport is proposing to remove parking on Onewa Rd to make a full clearway and ease congestion.
Changes to one of the North Shore and Auckland’s busiest roads include synchronising traffic lights and putting in a shared path.
Other changes include adjusting parking on Seaview and Nutsey Aves and removing a bus stop.
One of Auckland’s busiest roads would have all its parking removed, a shared path put in, and changes to traffic light phasing under a new proposal.
Auckland Transport (AT) has proposed a slew of changes for Onewa Rd on the North Shore to ease traffic congestion. "

So does AT think that making Onewa Road a full clearway will ease congestion???
Logically, this does not make sense if the congestion is from morning commuter traffic and the clearway is already in use during that period. The same number of vehicles will be using the road, drivers aren't going to suddenly decide to head to work at 10 am just because the clearway will be available then (once the new road changes are made), no, they will still want to get to work by 8:00-9am and the road use and congestion will remain the same.
My solution to this issue is:
1) Free up the general lane by reducing the T3 to a T2, getting a bit more use out of this lane.
2) Reduce the cost of ferries to cap the fee to $50 a week, as AT have done for buses and trains.
3) (and here is the big one) Stop housing intensification either permanently or until our infrastructure is better organised to cope with the influx of commuters.
Please share this petition, let's put the pressure on AT to shift Onewa Road to T2.
