WE NEED TO CHANGE China Public Education System, Technology & AI Are the Best Way Forward

The Issue

Growing up, I experienced firsthand how access to educational resources can shape a student’s opportunities. While some students had access to experienced teachers, advanced courses, and personalised guidance, many others, especially in less developed regions, relied on limited materials and overcrowded classrooms. I saw talented peers struggle not because of a lack of ability, but because of unequal access to support and high-quality instruction.

These experiences made me realize that education is one of the most powerful drivers of social mobility and national development, yet significant disparities remain within China’s public education system. Students’ opportunities often depend heavily on where they are born rather than their innate talent or effort. In the age of artificial intelligence, technology offers a historic opportunity to reform and revolutionise this system.

By integrating AI and advanced technology into the public education system, we can provide personalised learning experiences tailored to each student’s unique needs and abilities. This can democratize access to quality education, enabling students from all regions, irrespective of their socio-economic background, to reach their full potential.

We urge policymakers, education authorities, and schools to prioritise the implementation of AI-driven educational tools. These tools can help bridge the gap between urban and rural education systems, providing equal opportunities for all students. AI can support teachers in creating adaptive learning environments, while technology can facilitate remote learning, bringing experienced educators and comprehensive curricula to every corner of the nation.

In addition, increasing investment in AI infrastructure and training for educators will empower schools to harness these tools effectively, ensuring a standardised, high-quality education across the board. Collaboration with tech companies and educational organizations can expedite the development of these solutions and tailor them to the diverse needs of students across China.

Let us not allow geographic location to dictate a child's future. Support the reform of China's public education system by leveraging AI and technology to eliminate regional inequalities. Let us come together to create an ecosystem where every student has the opportunity to thrive.

I. Why Reform Is Necessary

China’s public education system faces structural challenges:

1. Regional Inequality
Top teachers and facilities are concentrated in major cities, while rural and less-developed areas face shortages.

2. Unequal Access to Quality Teaching
Students in some regions lack exposure to advanced courses and experienced educators.

3. Standardised Teaching for Diverse Learners
Students with different abilities are taught the same content at the same pace.

4. Overloaded Teachers in Underserved Areas
Teachers in resource-limited schools often handle large class sizes and multiple roles.

5. Limited Exposure to Modern Skills
Many schools lack access to AI literacy, programming, and interdisciplinary learning.

II. Consequences of Not Reforming

Without reform:

  • Regional education gaps will widen
  • Social mobility may decrease
  • Talent in underserved regions may remain undiscovered
  • Students may experience increased academic pressure
  • Teachers in rural areas may face burnout
  • National innovation capacity could be affected

III. What Students Truly Need
Students across China deserve:

  • Equal access to high-quality teaching resources
  • Personalised learning pathways
  • Opportunities to develop creativity and critical thinking
  • Exposure to modern technology and AI literacy
  • Collaborative learning across regions
  • Reduced pressure and more meaningful learning experiences

IV. How to Reform with Technology and AI Solutions

1. National AI-Powered Learning Platform
Provide adaptive lessons tailored to each student’s level.

2. Shared Live Classroom Network
Top teachers broadcast interactive lessons nationwide.

3. AI Teaching Assistants for Rural Schools
Support teachers with grading, planning, and tutoring.

4. Intelligent Resource Allocation System
Use data to distribute funding and resources more fairly.

5. AI Diagnostic Assessment Tools
Identify learning gaps and provide targeted interventions.

6. Virtual Laboratory and Simulation Platforms
Allow students in all regions to conduct experiments digitally.

7. Teacher Training via Online AI Platforms
Provide continuous professional development regardless of location.

8. Cross-Regional Project-Based Learning
Students collaborate with peers from different provinces.

9. AI Career Guidance for Students
Help students explore opportunities beyond geographic limitations.

10. Open Digital Curriculum Repository
Free access to high-quality textbooks, exercises, and multimedia content.

V. Expected Outcomes of Reform
Implementing these solutions will:

  • Reduce regional education inequality
  • Improve fairness in resource distribution
  • Empower teachers in underserved areas
  • Increase student engagement and motivation
  • Promote creativity and innovation
  • Support balanced national development
  • Enable every student to reach their full potential

VI. Our Vision for China

With AI-driven education reform, China can:

  • Build a more equitable public education system
  • Unlock talent from all regions
  • Reduce urban-rural disparities
  • Prepare students for an AI-driven future
  • Strengthen long-term innovation and economic growth

We call on:

  • Education authorities to pilot AI-based equity programs
