We must SAVE the New Perry Hotel from Demolition

We must SAVE the New Perry Hotel from Demolition
The Issue
The National Register listed New Perry Hotel is facing an eminent demolition!
This is an iconic Historic Landmark that has impacted thousands of people over the years.
We as a community CAN NOT lose this iconic Perry landmark. So many in the community have fond memories swimming at their pool, celebrating anniversaries, weddings, and special dinners in the restaurant.
The NPH would provide immense economic contributions to Perry’s Main Street. It is the only hotel directly adjacent to downtown and would provide a unique Perry experience year round.
Also, it has been said that the NPH is not sound enough to be saved. We have it on good authority that this structure CAN BE SAVED! We feel it would be wise to require a preservation minded contractor to inspect and advise on the future of NPH. Because the NPH is listed on the NRHP it is eligible for 40% historic tax credit on any qualified rehabilitation expense. Additionally, there are grants and programs through the National Trust for Historic Places Historic Hotels of America to rehab and market the NPH as a destination.
We ask that the owners of NPH be completely transparent by sharing the name of the contractor they used, as well as, the report that showed the NPH was not salvageable.
So many cities across the Southeast are going to great lengths ro save their historic buildings, we feel it imperative that Perry, Georgia do the same.
We have reviewed the ordinance in an effort to find ways to save the NPH and found that Mayor Walker and the Perry city council have the power to over rule the Main Street Board’s decision. Members of the group working to save the hotel did attend the MSB meeting and unfortunately did not get a chance to speak in opposition. Furthermore, since the NPH is so iconic, we would hope to have more opportunity to discuss its fate as a community.
We ask that Mayor Walker and the Perry City Council please stop or defer any effort to demolish the New Perry Hotel so that a preservation minded buyer could be secured and to also allow more adequate public involvement.
This demolition will negatively impact our entire community and once it is gone, it is gone forever. Please help us stop this.
