We do not want a Central Register for Foster Carers.

We do not want a Central Register for Foster Carers.
The Issue
We do not want a Central Register for Foster Carers...
One of the main reasons being presented to government ministers is:
"The need for more robust safeguarding measures in the fostering sector".
The logic to this statement is the idea that previously deregistered foster carers simply move and get reassessed elsewhere. Given the rigorous assessment process - including face to face interviews with family members and references from employers, plus exploration of gaps in employment history and entries on the DBS register - it is difficult to see how this is a real risk.
It is however, a way to force foster carers to share their personal data with a wide audience and we don’t consent to our data being shared.
We are also deeply concerned that it will lead to a secondary DBS system, where the flawed and negligent investigations against foster carers which we see every day will be recorded as fact in a manner - which will have a massive impact on carers who have been subjected to unfair processes leading to miscarriages of justice.
We have not seen any data to support why a central register is more beneficial than improving the existing measures that are already in place.
Foster carers' voices continue to be ignored.
Decisions continue to be made by people who have never fostered and lack knowledge and insight into the real issues causing the retention crisis.
Our opinions at FosterSupport are truly independent, and backed by our extensive work in supporting Foster Carers whilst ensuring that everything is handled fairly and lawfully.
Nothing about us without us.
