On August 23, 2022,  School Board Member Rhonda Thurman made a statement to The Chattanoogan where she said that Latinx students are a burden to Hamilton County Schools. 

It's no secret that our immigrant and Latinx communities in Chattanooga have tremendously grown and positively impacted our city. Similarly, it's also no secret to all of Chattanooga that Rhonda Thurman has a long history of ethical violations and of unapologetically attacking marginalized students and communities. 

As we reviewed her record, we were confounded as to how a  school board member  for over eighteen years, solely elected to represent “at all times the entire school community” and “to provide equal educational opportunities for all children regardless of ability, race, color, sex, creed or location of residence (District Policy Code 1.106)," could go on various egregious tirades about marginalized communities -- namely about Black, Latinx, Disabled, and LGBTQ+ students--without showing any initiative to change or without facing any real consequences.

Given this latest egregious violation of the Code of Ethics and Duties of individual School Board members as outlined by this Board, we present this petition to the Hamilton County School Board to demand:

1. Rhonda Thurman resign immediately from the Hamilton County School Board and issue an immediate apology to Latinx Students and everyone who she has attacked and marginalized in her long tenure on the Board.
2. The Hamilton County School Board create a task force/committee composed of: Latinx students, Latinx parents, educators, board members, and administrators to begin open and real conversations about issues facing the community, and develop an action plan with a clear timeline and success markers to better support Latinx students, parents, educators, and administrators county wide. As a part of this plan, we demand an immediate investment in trauma informed counselors, therapists, mental health specialists, and translators for ALL Hamilton County Schools that require them.
3. The Hamilton County School Board enact updated policies to the Code of Ethics that specifically prohibits any kind of language, bullying or behavior from School Board members that is any less respectful than the standard which students and educators are held to.

Together, we will demonstrate that the Latinx community, but especially our students, are welcomed and supported in Chattanooga.

El 23 de agosto de 2022, Rhonda Thurman, miembro de la Junta Escolar, hizo un comentario publico donde reclamo que los estudiantes Latinxs/Hispanos son una carga para las escuelas del condado de Hamilton.

No es secreto que nuestras comunidades inmigrantes y Latinx en Chattanooga han crecido tremendamente y han tenido un impacto positivo en nuestra ciudad. Del mismo modo, no es un secreto para todo Chattanooga y para la Junta Escolar que Rhonda Thurman tiene un largo historial de violaciones éticas y de ataques contra estudiantes y comunidades marginados.

Al revisar su historial, no pudimos creer cómo un miembro de la junta escolar durante más de dieciocho años, elegida únicamente para representar "en todo momento a toda la comunidad escolar" y "brindar igualdad de oportunidades educativas para todos los niños, independientemente de su capacidad, raza, color, sexo, credo o lugar de residencia (Código de Políticas del Distrito 1.106)," pudiera decir cosas tan terribles sobre las comunidades marginadas sin mostrar ninguna iniciativa para cambiar o sin enfrentar alguna consecuencia real.

Dada esta última violación atroz del Código de Ética y Deberes de los miembros individuales de la Junta Escolar como lo describe esta Junta, presentamos esta petición a la Junta Escolar del Condado de Hamilton para exigir:

1. Que Rhonda Thurman RENUNCIE INMEDIATAMENTE de la Junta Escolar del Condado de Hamilton y emite una disculpa inmediata a los estudiantes latinos y a todos los que ha atacado en su larga permanencia en la Junta.
2. La Junta Escolar del Condado de Hamilton crea un grupo compuesto por: Estudiantes y padres latinxs, sus educadores, miembros de la junta y administradores para comenzar conversaciones abiertas y reales sobre los problemas que enfrenta la comunidad Y para desarrollar un plan de acción con marcadores de éxito para apoyar mejor a la comunidad Latinx en todo el condado. Como parte de este plan, exigimos una inversión inmediata en consejeros, terapeutas, especialistas en salud mental y traductores informados sobre trauma para TODAS las escuelas del condado de Hamilton que les requieran.
3. La Junta Escolar promulga políticas actualizadas del Código de Ética que prohíben  cualquier tipo de lenguaje, intimidación o comportamiento de los miembros de la Junta Escolar que sea menos respetuoso que el estándar al que están sujetos los estudiantes y educadores.
