We Demand a Publically Owned Postal Bank!

We Demand a Publically Owned Postal Bank!
The Issue
To the Right Honourable Prime Minister; and the Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works and Procurement.
In September 2025, it was announced that the federal government is embarking on a “modernization plan” that authorizes Canada Post to end door-to-door delivery and delay the mail by cutting delivery standards for non-urgent mail. The narrative used to justify these cuts is that Canada Post is in bad financial shape thanks to excessive spending and the decline of letter-mail.
However, Canada Post has long known of a proven solution that has made postal operations financially sustainable world-wide: Postal Banking.
There was a profitable postal bank in Canada from the time of Confederation in 1867 until 1969 when the federal government caved to pressure from the big banks. Getting back into postal banking wouldn't require an act of Parliament, it's still on the books and would only require the courage to stand up to the big banks.
There's a Canadian flag in every community across Canada because there's a post office there. If Canada Post got back into postal banking, Canadians would own the largest banking network in the country overnight, providing financial alternatives to the six big banks and the predatory payday lenders.
The ability to use brick and mortar postal locations would also provide viable and sustainable opportunities to expand into other community initiatives like internet hubs for rural and remote communities and indigenous communities.
While the big banks are profit driven with a mandate to maximize revenues for their shareholders, a postal bank would be a public service. Its sole shareholder would be the Canadian public, with a sole mandate to serve the needs and interests of all Canadians.
The proven revenues generated through postal banking could be used to cross subsidize the important things that resonate with Canadians like healthcare, education, seniors, veterans and housing, through the federal transfer programs to the Provinces and Territories, while also off setting the tax burden on working Canadians.
The Right Honourable Prime Minister recently referred to Canada Post as "an essential public service worth saving" but refuses to embrace the single greatest opportunity to do so. Instead, this government enacts austerity measures that erode the value of this essential public service and sets up the framework for privatization.
Postal Banking is a true nation building project, one that won’t require any extraction or infringe on anyone’s treaty rights. It would be owned by Canadians, operated by Canadians and would benefit Canadians from coast to coast to coast. With billions of dollars at stake, it's time the federal government finally put the interests of hard-working Canadians before the interests of the big banks.
We, the undersigned, demand that the Government of Canada direct Canada Post to institute a fully public Postal Bank to the benefit of all Canadians.
