We are Matt's Voice Implement Stricter Guidelines for Inmate Safety
The Issue
To Whom It May Concern, I am writing this letter with a heavy heart regarding the recent, tragic death of my friend, Matt Roark, while he was in custody at the Caldwell County Detention Center. Matt’s passing is a devastating loss that should never have happened, and it highlights critical, life-threatening gaps in the safety and medical protocols within our local facility. I am launching a petition to demand immediate, systemic changes to protect the lives of every individual who enters that facility. We cannot sit by and let preventable tragedies continue to occur. Our Demands for Reform: Stricter Inmate Safety Guidelines: Enforce rigorous monitoring, safety checks, and accountability measures across all housing units. Enforced Medical Procedures: Establish strict, non-negotiable medical protocols that staff must follow when an inmate is suffering. Mandatory Crisis Training: Require every staff member at the jail to undergo thorough, routine in-service training on how to properly and rapidly identify inmates experiencing medical crises, drug withdrawals, and overdoses. Faster Response Times: Drastically improve officer response times to inmates calling for help during a medical or psychological crisis. Every second delayed can mean the difference between life and death. Increased Medical Staffing: Ensure there are more licensed medical professionals on hand around the clock to immediately assess and treat emergencies. Calling All Men and Women of Law Enforcement When you put that badge on, you are bound by a code of ethics. All personal feelings, prejudices, and personal opinions regarding people's life choices must go out the window when you work in public service. You are here to protect, serve our community, and preserve human life—not just for citizens on the outside, but equally for the inmates inside your care. Ask yourselves: What if this was your own family member? Inmates, regardless of the reasons they are in jail, are human beings who deserve the same basic respect, dignity, and right to life as anyone else. Be Matt's Voice Thank you to everyone who supports this cause. I thank you, and Matt Roark’s family thanks you. Please help us ensure that Matt did not die in vain. Please sign, share, and post this petition to as many social media platforms as you can so that demanding voices are heard, accountability is established, and real changes are finally made. Sincerely, Amy Icenhour amyicenhour06@gmail.com
