Greetings community members, Last week, the Plan Commission unanimously recommended approval of the expansion of the downtown building height limit to 55 feet. While the primary intention of this is for Hovde, it could also be used for the Wall project. Tomorrow (Monday) evening (6 pm; Village Hall), there will be a public hearing on the proposed limit increase at the Village Board meeting. Beginning at 5pm until the time of the meeting, there will be an open house with village officials where citizens can ask questions about the height limit expansion. We do not support the height limit increase. Also on the agenda, the Village Board will most likely meet in closed session to vote on the purchase of the former Hofbrau Haus building (across the alley from Gold Nugget/Sweet Pea Floral), which would be demolished for additional downtown parking. The building was constructed in 1929 and was previously used for a men's club, dance hall, the first bowling alley called Smitty's Lanes until 1972, the Hofbrau Haus, and a supper club. It has significant historical value in our community and there is plenty of room to add parking around the structure on the grassy lot just to the east. It would be nice to see the building repurposed for another business instead of the history going away with demolition. In Westport tomorrow (Monday) evening (7 pm; Westport Town Hall), there will be a Town Board meeting related to annexing 130 acres of land into Waunakee for another high-end Don Tierney development. There are many lots available in Waunakee/Westport in a wide variety of subdivisions and areas. We do not need to add another subdivision if we have a surplus of existing lots already. Please attend one of these meetings if you are able to do so.
